About the Drawing Program from Creating a Masterpiece
Sharon Hofer is the artist-teacher behind this drawing program. Her teaching style is easy to follow, even for young kids. Even though the drawings had multiple steps to completion, the process didn’t overwhelm my children.
The quality of the videos in this course are excellent and we were able to replicate her finished projects pretty closely!
While we stayed primarily within the beginning drawing lessons with pencil, Creating a Masterpiece includes these additional media (35 total and counting!):
- Wood Burning
- Balsa Carving
- Glass Mosaic
- Glass Etching
- Faux Stained Glass
- Rubber Stamp Printmaking
- Acrylic Painting

- Soft Pastel
- Oil Pastel

- and more~!
How We Used Creating a Masterpiece
My 6 and 11-year-olds tried out several projects from the Beginning Drawing section of the course and were surprised at their results!
My 6-year-old is a typical 6-year-old who draws stick figures and lopsided houses! But by following the step-by-step instructions from Sharon Hofer she was able to create realistic drawings that impressed the whole family.
Each section of the video lessons was a few minutes long and very clear that even my first grader could follow along without any trouble.
Here is a step-by-step progression of her Moonstruck drawing. The only part I had to help her with was drawing the straight lines with a ruler.
After the basic shapes were in place, she added color with pencils.
She was so proud of her accomplishment!
And we were impressed with the instruction provided in the Creating a Masterpiece Drawing Program.
My youngest was so enthusiastic that she tried multiple lessons! Here is the first part of the owl drawing instruction.
And here is her finished owl – pretty good for a 6-year-old who normally draws like a. . .6-year-old!
Creating a Masterpiece Review Recommendations
Kids from kindergarten all the way through twelfth grade (and even adults) would benefit from this drawing program. And the more kids in your homeschool, the better the deal, because once you pay for the course, everyone in your house can use it.
Parent involvement was minimal, but included:
- gathering supplies
- getting the video set-up for viewing
- helping my 6-year-old with drawing straight lines with a ruler
- cheering them on!
In the beginning drawing lessons, the supplies were mostly ones we had on hand from previous art programs through the years. The supplies could easily be found online if you don’t have them already.
This is my 11-year-old’s finished drawing from a pencil lesson called Simplicity.
If you want to move your homeschool art lessons from more of an arts and crafts style to a higher masterpiece-type art, then Creating a Masterpiece is just what you’ve been looking for!
You can even sign up to try a free sample project in soft pastel if you’d like to see first-hand what Sharon Hofer’s teaching style is like and what kind of finished product you can expect from your kids if you decide to use Creating a Masterpiece.
