Discipleship in Homeschool
Goals might be:
- Teach our kids the basic stories
- Teach multiple ages together
- Have them learn catechism & doctrine
- Apologetics (defending the faith & why they believe what they believe)
- How does it mesh with history
- Eventually we want our kids & teens to be able to pick up an actual Bible and read it and understand it for themselves
But, the problem is that we won’t necessarily get to that life goal of Bible literacy without a plan or appropriate tools. Just handing a teen a Bible and telling them to “go read it” probably isn’t going to work too well.
How can we bridge that gap? I believe that teaching our kids & teens the inductive Bible study method will open up the Bible to them. They won’t be reliant on devotionals or worksheets to explain the text. They will be able to be fathers and mothers someday that teach the Bible to their families, to the next generation.
What is inductive Bible study?
The Inductive Bible Study Method is so named because of the way you interact with the text. In the inductive method, you are making observations and then drawing conclusions from the passage, or finding the big idea.
Some of these observations might be:
- Key words
- Repeated ideas
- Compare/contrast
- Logic/argument
You’re starting from observation about the text (what does the text say?), then progressing to interpretation (what does the text mean?), and finally application (how should this change me?).
The inductive Bible study method teaches you to read through a book of the Bible noticing these parts:
- background & author
- how this book fits into the entire Bible
- reading in the proper context
- noticing key words
- finding attributes of God
- and more!
The Inductive Bible Study Method thrives by letting the text speak for itself. It involves noticing the details in a passage as you study through whole books of the Bible, then finding the key idea, interpreting the passage, and finally applying it.
Value of Inductive Studies in Discipleship
An Inductive Bible Study will challenge your assumptions, which is a good thing! It will also force you to dig into the text to find the interpretation, the big idea, and the application. This is not a surface-level type of Bible study method.
The Inductive Bible Study method also typically studies verse by verse in a complete context. Even better, with this method, you are encouraged to study whole books of the Bible at a time! This gives the best interpretation of passages, as you get a more complete view of what the author intended.
You might think that this Bible study method sounds too hard for kids! But it’s not! I’ve taught my own kids, as young as 2nd grade to study passages using this method. And it makes for much deeper conversation than just topical studies.
Inductive Bible Study Courses
We’ve created the Little Fishes Bible Study so that your kids in grades K-4 will have a gentle introduction to the inductive method as they study key passages in a book. With a 4-day-per-week schedule, there is enough material to cover 9 weeks.
There is copywork, verse memorization, drawing, and of course learning the steps of observation, interpretation, and application through the text of Scripture.
Your kids and teens in grades 5-12 can study independently through an entire book of the Bible using the Self Study Workbook. There are suggested 4-day and 5-day-per-week schedules to help your planning.
And your high schoolers can even complete the optional projects related to their book study and get 1/4 credit on their homeschool transcript for this 9 week course.
Adding in the optional Video Lessons will help your visual and auditory learners!
Finally, check out our Family Bundles if you have children spanning K-12 that would like to study the same book of the Bible together. You’ll get access to Little Fishes, Self Study Workbook, and the Video Lessons.
