Everyone wants to select the absolute best homeschool curriculum possible. But the reality is that there is no perfect curriculum. What works for your friend may not work for you. And even the most popular resource on the market may not be a good fit for your kids.
So instead of trying to find the best homeschool curriculum, let’s expand that search to the best homeschool curriculum for YOU in this season.
Because I know after homeschooling five kids for over 15 years now that sometimes your favorite curriculum in one season just doesn’t work in another season. Or with other kids. For whatever reason, things change and even once-loved curriculum gets tossed for something else. And that’s okay.
Here’s how to choose the best curriculum for your unique kids in the season you’re in. Plus – what do you do if something isn’t working (even mid-year)? Are you allowed to quit? We’ll cover that too!
How to Find the Best Homeschool Curriculum
The funny thing about homeschool curriculum is that there is not one perfect choice! Obviously, it has a lot to do with the goals, educational philosophy, worldview, and learning styles of your family. Add in budgetary restraints and how many kids you’re trying to teach this year, and you’ll end up with less options than you started with!
It’s great that there are so many resources available to homeschoolers, but you do need to have some essential questions in your toolbox so that you can narrow it down. Then, once you have your choice, homeschool with confidence – knowing that you can always change things up if they’re not working. Remember, you’re in charge of your curriculum, not the other way around.
Here are the essential questions to ask to find the best homeschool curriculum for your family for this year:
- what is your worldview?
- how old are your children?
- are you trying to teach multiple ages together?
- do you want a boxed curriculum or eclectic approach?
- lesson plans or open & go?
- self teaching or interactive?
- what is your teaching style?
- what about your children’s learning styles?
- budget?
We dive into each of these topics in the episode!
